The Biological Archaeology of Jilin University enjoys outstanding advantages and sound research foundation in the field of physical anthropology and molecular archaeology. After nearly three decades of development, it is taking the lead in many related research directions in China. In 2014, it was recognized as the fifth batch of key scientific research bases of the State Administration of Cultural Relics.

The Scientific Research Base takes all kinds of biological remains unearthed from archaeological excavations, in particular, human bones, teeth, hair and organ tissues as the research objects, the comprehensive application of modern natural science methods as technical support and scientific research innovation points, physical anthropology and molecular archaeology as the main research direction, and interdisciplinary research of natural science and social science as the main direction; it takes the major theoretical issues of constitution and change in the formation of the Chinese nation, the academic frontier issues at home and abroad and the major needs of the county as the main research content and the acquisition of independent primary innovation achievements as the main research objective. The Center implements the operation mechanism featuring “openness, flow, cooperation and competition”.

The Scientific Research Base, for the first time, integrates the superior resources of Chinese universities and scientific research institutes. Relying on the Scientific Research Base, we will realize the sharing of technology, talents, database, scientific research, teaching and other resources, which will be of exemplary significance for the development of philosophy and social sciences in China, and the promotion of multi-discipline, especially the cross and penetration of humanities and natural sciences. As the only national platform in this research field, the Scientific Research Base has carried out basic and international cooperative research in the fields of paleoanthropology, paleopathology, palaeodietary science, ancient DNA and other biological archaeology research fields, oriented to the international scientific frontier and national major needs.
