Abstract:

I obtained my PhD in analytical chemistry in 2009 from the University of Pisa and the University Pierre & Marie Curie (Paris, France) in collaboration with the "Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France" (Paris). My doctoral research mainly concerned the development of a multi-analytical approach based on separation, structural and spectroscopic techniques for the characterisation of organic and inorganic materials from archaeological Roman burials.

In 2009, I joined the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research at the British Museum (London) where I conducted research on the characterisation of organic materials, particularly focusing on organic residues in ceramics using Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and on natural organic colorants using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). In 2011, based at the British Museum, I took up the role of postdoctoral researcher on the Leverhulme Trust-funded project "Andean textiles: organic colourants, biological sources and dyeing technologies". The main objective was to study the organic colourant sources and dyeing technologies in the Andean textile collections of the British Museum and the quai Branly Museum to complement the “traditional” study of iconography and weaving techniques and contribute to the preservation of the collections.

I joined the University of Oxford in April 2014 and my research is mainly based at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art. I work on the development of preparative HPLC methods for the separation of amino acids extracted from contaminated archaeological bones in order to improve the radicarbon dating. My research also includes extraction, characterisation and purification of organic materials from different matrix (bones, ceramics, textiles) using Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS) techniques.
